Associate Pastor
Emmanuel Epsom
Emmanuel Epsom is a Christ-centred church on the edge of south-west London. We seek to be shaped by grace and to make disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ. We are a congregation of about 90, made up of local people of every age and stage of life. We are looking for a man to be our full-time Associate Pastor, working as an integral part of our Ministry Team (Senior Pastor and Women's Worker) and Eldership. This role will involve teaching the Bible faithfully, encouraging others in their walk with Christ, making Christ and his church known to the local community, supporting the pastoral needs of the church and overseeing our children and youth work.
We are seeking a man who:
● has a mature, personal commitment to Jesus and is humble, loving and prayerful
● is an experienced preacher, has preferably had some theological training, loves God's Word and believes in its power to change lives and build the church
● loves God's people and has experience of leading others servant-heartedly and handling pastoral needs biblically and sensitively
● has a passion for, and experience of, discipling children and young people
● takes the gospel, but not himself, seriously.
This role is subject to an occupational requirement that the post holder is a Christian man in full agreement with our statement of faith and our doctrinal distinctives. You must have the right to work in the UK.
Role and responsibilities
- Work as an integral and active part of the Ministry Team and Eldership, under the direction and guidance of the Senior Pastor, focusing upon discipling, training and developing people as they walk with Jesus in the church and community.
- Be an active member of Emmanuel Epsom, including regular attendance at Sunday services and prayer meetings.
- Teach the Bible in person to person ministry.
- Preach regularly (approx once or twice a month).
- Lead church services and prayer meetings (approx once or twice a month).
- Regularly pray for the church, its members and the wider community.
- Provide leadership, encouragement, counsel and vision to church members.
- Engage with various church ministries, including Senior Moments (our group for older people) and Men's Ministry.
- Coordinate children and youth ministries.
These are currently:
● Creche (Sunday am)
● Emmanuel Kids (age 4-11, Sunday am)
● EK Extra (age 6-11 on a Thurs eve)
● Rooted (11-16 on a Sunday morning and evening)
● Kids' talks on a Sunday morning and at termly parties
- Offer pastoral support in a variety of contexts.
- Develop the role, in order to maximize its effectiveness and scope
- Seek out and participate in learning and development opportunities associated with the role.
- Participate in appropriate networks associated with the role.
- Membership of the Safeguarding Team and Assistant Designated Safeguarding Lead.
Required Skills
- A committed, maturing Christian in agreement with the Church's Basis of Faith.
- A love for God's church and people.
- Experience of working with, and encouraging a range of, people in a church setting.
- Proven ability to teach and preach the Bible in an engaging way to Christians and non-believers.
- Theological training (either formal or informal).
- Experience of working with children and young people, preferably in a church setting.
- Proven ability to initiate, maintain and build working relationships with others, both inside and outside the church environment.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Proven ability to lead others in ministry.
- Organised and able to use resources effectively and creatively.
- Ability to maintain appropriate confidentiality.
- Experience of providing pastoral support, either formally or informally.
- Ability to work on one's own initiative and with a team.
- Preferably, some experience and understanding of safeguarding practice for children.
- Willingness to work contracted hours on a flexible basis, including weekends and evenings.
- Willingness to learn and develop skills relevant to the post.
- Willingness to network with others in the church and at local, regional and national levels.
