Defending Against Defeater Beliefs 1
The first of two seminars given by Don Carson at our 2018 Leaders' Conference.
Defeater beliefs are beliefs that defeat other beliefs. For example, if you believe that there cannot be just one way to God, then claims for the exclusiveness of Christ will strike you as untenable, perhaps arrogant, in any case foolish. As our culture frees itself more and more from Christian moorings, it adopts many defeater beliefs that make Christian witness an increasing challenge. These two seminars identify some of the strongest of the current, clamouring, defeater beliefs, and explores ways of responding to them – indeed, if you will excuse the irony, ways of defeating them!
Don is research professor of New Testament at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois and president of The Gospel Coalition. He has written or edited around 60 books, including The Gagging of God: Christianity Confronts Pluralism, The Intolerance of Tolerance and Christ and Culture Revisited.
