Glorifying God in Street

The church is not the building, it’s the people. But a building can help a growing church to be even more effective in its gospel witness. Steve Burge explains how Street Baptist Church in Somerset have been expanding their facilities in a £1m building project to fuel their mission and evangelism.

The Great Commission at the end of Matthew’s Gospel is for every Christian:

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

At Street Baptist Church we know that our Great Commission starts in our own community. That’s why many years ago, the leadership team here had a clear vision to improve our church building. This was to help our growing church to reach out into the local community and the wider area of central Somerset.

In the intervening years, we’ve outgrown the building. We now meet in a local school and are blessed to have more than 200 people gathering with us to worship our loving Father every Sunday.

But continued growth means we needed a more radical plan to meet our needs. So we were able to buy additional land next to our existing building and now we’ve been able to create a whole new extension.

Lessons learned

We have an amazing and awesome God, and for God, nothing is impossible. At times over the last few years, when a number of obstacles were looming – especially when it appeared planning permission wouldn’t be granted – God answered our prayers.

Design for Street BC's building

Work started on the new church building in Spring 2016. More than £600,000 had been raised by the congregation to enable all the groundwork and framework to be completed. Late last year the block work, timber cladding, windows and doors were finished.

Earlier this year the drainage, internal walls, flooring and stairs were added with more than £750,000 raised and spent to date.

So we come to the next phase of the building project. We now need to complete the external fire escapes and to do the electrics, plumbing and heating, complete the carpentry and internal fixings and then sort out the rendering and plastering. The funds that we need to raise for this phase is £100,000 and a further £300,000 to complete the whole project.

Throughout the process, our plans have always been led by our prayers and God has been wonderful in providing resources; but we fully accept that it is through individual and small efforts that we do our part.

The building
