(NB We would consider adjusting this role to suit someone who already had theological education and was looking for experience: a ‘Minister-in-Training’ would likely be given more Bible teaching, and appropriate ongoing training. )
We are looking for a Ministry Trainee to join us for one-year (potentially extending to a second year) from 1 September 2022. The Ministry Trainee role is about being trained for future serving, whether formally or informally in the local church. This position is ideal for someone considering the possibility of full-time Bible-teaching ministry in the future. Take a look at our website: churchbythebay.org.uk/about-us/what-were-about/ministry-trainee-scheme/.
The role is split into three and roughly one third of the week is spent doing each:
Training
Formal training is provided by the North West Gospel Partnership Training Course (www.northwestgospelpartnership.com). This course covers Biblical theology (how the Bible fits together, centred on Christ), exposition (how to teach the Bible), doctrine and practical ministry, as well as an opportunity for practice Bible talks with feedback.
In-house training is provided through staff meetings, including help for Bible teaching and feedback, reading books together, and our own training evenings. Our training covers: Bible handling skills; Bible teaching skills; doctrine; and pastoral issues.
Ministry Trainees will be mentored by the Pastor, or the Women’s Worker, as appropriate. Staff meetings include weekly lunch together. There is plenty of time for informal learning and observing as we share our lives together.
Bible Teaching
Ministry Trainees have the opportunity to put their training into practice and teach God’s Word in a variety of ways. This might include leading Sunday meetings, occasional preaching, children’s work, youth work, leading adult Bible studies, music, internationals, as well as opportunities to meet and share God’s Word at a 1-1 level. We also ask Trainees to meet non-Christians as part of a community or interest group.
All the Bible teaching opportunities will be discussed by the Pastor and the Ministry Trainee and consideration taken of gifts, experience, enthusiasm and whether they are considering becoming a pastor in the future.
Practical Ministry
There are practical and administrative tasks which may include: setting up on Sunday mornings, Church administration and helping to organize events.
Required Skills
Ministry Trainees will know and love the Lord Jesus and want to grow in their relationship with Him. They will be humble before God’s word and hungry to learn. Ministry Trainees will be servant-hearted, flexible and prepared to commit themselves to Church by the Bay as we work for Christ’s Kingdom in Morecambe. They will want to work hard for God’s glory and be willing to be out of their comfort zones. They will love people and have strong motivation for evangelism and discipleship. They will be willing to learn how to communicate with all ages. They will be organized and self-disciplined. They will be team players, loyal to the staff and elders.
