Penny Duckworth (Minister of Operations)

SCC has a growing number of families with children ranging from 0-13 with the largest proportion in the 4-7 age range. On a Sunday we run a creche (0-2), a Tots group (2-4) and a Kids group for primary-aged children. From October 2022 the school-aged group will split into two groups; KS1 and KS2. This will enable leaders to provide focused, age-appropriate Bible teaching to two smaller groups and allow for further growth in numbers.

As this role is so centred around an intimate and caring understanding of the families at SCC, over the first few terms you will perform the role under the guidance and leadership of the current, voluntary Children & Youth Ministry Leader and slowly take over from them the responsibilities as follows:

  1. Overall Leader of Children’s Sunday Groups at SCC - research and collate suitable teaching material, give guidance on chosen material for each group. Training, coordinating & recruiting volunteers. Regular communication and assistance with Team Leaders of each group. Gather and maintain other necessary resources for groups.
  2. All Age Slots during the main Sunday gatherings - sourcing & preparing material, overseeing & training team, leading the all age slot on a regular basis.
  3. Liaising with the wider ministry team to ensure Sunday gatherings are outsider friendly & appropriate for the children & families attending. Ensure that information is clearly communicated for new families and the correct protocol is in place for children’s groups.
  4. Safeguarding Officer and Lead Recruiter of group leaders and helpers.

Wider support:

  1. Family & children focused church-wide communication
  2. Prepare & lead book groups/evenings/courses to support families in parenting and key issues
  3. Encouraging and supporting the integration of families and children into the wider ministry vision of the church
  4. Running events aimed at families & children
  5. Attending further training and providing further training for group leaders & helpers

Outreach: (this has yet to be done due to lack of time & resources, but should be the direction this role expands into)

Teenage & tweens- there are currently only a handful of 9-13 year olds regularly attending at church and there is currently no support for them outside of Sunday School

  1. Discipleship and Bible teaching for tweens & teenagers during the Sunday gathering
  2. Create and run an outreach/youth group

Connecting with local schools - there are a good number of local primary and secondary schools in Streatham.

  1. School outreach - liaising with other Children & Families Ministers in the area & making connections with schools in Streatham e.g. school assemblies

Vulnerable families

  1. Connecting with vulnerable families in Streatham - developing/using existing connections we have with Christians Against Poverty (CAP), Foodbank or our local neighbourhood
